Shortlist announced for Burnley Community Sports Awards

The shortlist of nominees for this year’s Burnley Community Sports Awards has been announced ahead of the ceremony in July.

The awards, which will be held at Burnley Mechanics Theatre on Thursday, 21st July, celebrate those who promote sport across the town and inspire future generations of athletes.

All shortlisted nominees have been invited to the prestigious prize-giving ceremony which will be hosted by former World Champion and Olympic silver medallist Roger Black.

The shortlisted nominees are:

  • Community Club of the Year – Burnley Rugby Club, Burnley Rounders Club, Clarets Cheer & Dance Squad
  • Coach of the Year – Nicola Hedge, Burnley Rounders Club; Noel Horton from Bobcats; Allan Clarkin from Burnley CombatSombo and Black Knights Kickboxing
  • Adult Volunteer of the Year – David Belshaw, Keiran Adamson, Mandy Brown
  • Young Volunteer of the Year – Ollie Holland, Mel Mitchell, Zara Mahmood
  • Community School of the Year– Holy Trinity C of E Primary, Shuttleworth College, Padiham St Leonard’s Primary School
  • Rising Star – Anya Richmond, Katie Rennolds, Dexta Thompson
  • Health Champion – John and Susan Nuttall, Marilyn Starkie, Rupali Begum

Other awards on the night being presented are the Brian Fenn Community Award, the Vicki Taylor Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Service to Disability Sport.

The awards are being sponsored by Girls Up & Active, KM Accountants, Burnley Play Partnership, Burnley Rounders Club, and Burnley College Elite Athlete Programme.

Michelle Grimes, events and funding officer with Burnley Leisure, said: “There was a huge number of nominations received and the judging panel had to make some difficult decisions.

“This event recognises and rewards local people for the part they play in Burnley’s grassroot sport and community development. It relies heavily on sponsorships and a huge thank you must go to the companies and organisations that are supporting this year’s event.”
