Walking football comes to Burnley

Football with a difference which aims to get adults off the bench is coming to Burnley.

Brand new Walking Football sessions are starting at St Peter’s Leisure Centre from Friday, 5th February.

The sessions will take place in the centre’s indoor sports hall every Friday between 10am and 11am.

To mark the launch of the new activity, residents are invited to join Clarets legend Willie Irvine in a free kick-about session on Friday, 5th February, at 10am.

Currently deemed a ‘UK fitness craze’, Walking Football is a sport based on regular football but played at walking pace with plenty of breaks.

Michelle Grimes, events and funding officer at Burnley Leisure, said: “We are delighted to be offering this new activity, giving local people the chance to get back into football, which is growing in popularity nationally.

“When people first hear about Walking Football, they assume that it will be played at a snail’s pace and lack the excitement of the traditional game, but they are usually in for a pleasant surprise.

“The sessions will include skills development and will help to build confidence in a friendly environment.”

Walking Football is an ideal sport for people of all ages and can be played regardless of physical ability and experience.

The sport helps people to improve their cardio vascular fitness, increase muscle strength and joint mobility, increase concentration skills or simply relive those glory days.

The sessions are priced £3.50 each and will be delivered by Burnley Leisure’s Get in2 and Healthy Lifestyles teams.
