Volunteer Megan scoops two national awards

An inspirational Burnley teenager has been celebrated for her hard work and dedication.

A 16-year-old student at Shuttleworth College Megan Kate Riley has been recognised by StreetGames with a double award for her tremendous work in the local community.

Megan, who has been part of Burnley Leisure’s Get in 2 volunteering programme for the past 12 months, won an overarching young sports volunteer of the year award along with the best new volunteer category award.

Megan is now officially the best volunteer in the whole of the UK, beating hundreds of projects and volunteers who are delivering opportunities in their local community.

She said: “It is absolutely amazing to win these awards and it feels great to be recognised.

“During my time with Get in 2, I have been involved in all kinds of activities and projects including Active Streets, Holiday Club and Step2it female only sessions, which honed my skills and gave my confidence a boost.

“I really enjoyed working within the local community and I am hoping to gain an apprenticeship with Burnley Leisure once I’ve left school.”

Held in Staffordshire last week, the awards highlighted the excellent work being carried out by projects and the volunteers across the UK.

Get in 2 team including a group of young volunteers also attended the awards ceremony to support Megan and to applaud the brilliant work being carried out across all sport and physical activity projects in Burnley.

Andrea Pilling, project activator at Burnley Leisure, said: “We are delighted for Megan to scoop not one but two national awards.

“There couldn’t be a better way to start National Volunteer Week and we are fortunate to have so many fantastic volunteers who work hard helping us strive towards providing leisure opportunities in Burnley.”

Megan has also been shortlisted for a young volunteer of the year award at Burnley Community Sports Awards, held at the Mechanics on Thursday, 9th July.
