Spring Season at Burnley Mechanics Theatre

Another Great Season of Entertainment at the Mechanics.

The Mechanics spring season of events has been released and this time it features some returning favourites, big names, a wealth of exciting talent and some more intimate, alternative shows.

Featuring a great selection of music, kicking off with the much anticipated return of Fairport Convention celebrating their 50th year in the business with this anniversary tour. Opera is big this season; the pioneers of popular opera, G4 will be back with their trademark harmonies and unique arrangements and there’s also West End vocal harmony group, Opera Boys, who delight audiences the world over with a powerful and emotional show. The annual Big Band Boogie promises to be bigger and better than ever this year as Josh Hindle and the 17 piece Swing City Big Band belt out the hits on a night of first class entertainment.

Some of the country’s finest tributes also feature in the line-up; there’s the world’s foremost tribute to The Electric Light Orchestra, ELO Experience with their sensational string section and stunning light show that really takes you on a magical journey through time and Mechanics favourite, Navi, King of Pop returns with his first class homage to Michael Jackson. Making his debut at the Mechanics, Chris Connor brings his World Famous Elvis Show and there’s another first for Soul Legends, the feel good show of the year direct from the USA. Rock n Roll Paradise will bring a rollercoaster of musical memories for those in the audience and the Moonlight Serenade Orchestra, along with the Andrew Sisters, will re-create the close harmony sound of those swinging days. There’s further nostalgia from The Rat Pack Vegas Spectacular recreating the magic of the purveyors of cool. The Mechanics will be buzzing with the sounds of the Madchester days as Happy Mondaze bring all the original Mondays ground breaking baggy sounds after a warm up DJ set from the one and only BEZ! This is followed later in the season by a big night of Manchester sounds from Oaces and The Clone Roses who both manage to recapture the mood of the 90’s and take the audience back in an indie time machine.

Big names in comedy will have Burnley’s sides splitting; fresh from his stint in the jungle, Danny Baker will be chatting about his hit autobiography and TV series Cradle to the Grave and northern charmer Justin Moorhouse will be back with more first rate comic craft on his People and Feelings tour. This is all topped off by a night of madcap music and laughs from local legends, The Lancashire Hotpots.

There’s plenty of choice for fans of the musicals this season; the ever popular Burnley Light Opera present their spring production, which this time is Sondheim’s Follies, a tale of faded glamour girls who reunite to save their old theatre from demolition. Returning for their 4th year, the highly acclaimed stage school, Valley Academy will perform the most uplifting musical of all time, Hairspray, followed later in the year by a production of Oliver performed by an adult cast. A musical reworking of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations is anticipated to be a particular highlight as the classic tale undergoes a unique and fun transformation that is set to delight the audience.

Children and families will be spoilt for choice; there’s something for all little people that the grown-ups will love too, from the all action American Wrestling, to a stage adaptation of the bestselling book by Julia Donaldson, The Scarecrows Wedding and a special Easter pantomime of Robin Hood starring Gareth Gates, Graham Cole and Zippy and George from Rainbow! Ballet Theatre UK present the magical Alice in Wonderland which follows the option to take afternoon tea in the Simply Classic Bistro, and first class Britain’s Got Talent ventriloquist, Steve Hewlitt and his collection of puppet friends will perform a hilarious new show.

Some special appearances from big names complete the main bill; the buzz has already started for the most naturally gifted footballer of his generation, sporting icon, Paul Gascoigne, who will be speaking about the eventful highs and lows of his life and sharing anecdotes and of course a few jokes. Strictly come dancing professional, Giovanni Pernice and his team of dancers will perform ‘Dance is Life’, a show exuding love and passion on a journey through dance, and Sally Morgan aka Psychic Sally, the nation’s favourite psychic, will be on stage, sharing her gift with the audience.
