Run from Couch to 5K with Burnley Leisure

Burnley Leisure has launched the free Couch to 5k programme to get people up and running who might never have run before.

Anyone that wants to ditch the couch and get into running can become able and confident to run five kilometres by the end of the nine-week period.  The programme is open to people of all ages and abilities

Paul Foster, head of development at Burnley Leisure, said: “If you don’t run and you want to start, Couch to 5k may be perfect for you. With a bit of support and coaching, over the nine weeks you will progress gradually to run five kilometres.

“After seeing how many people turned up at our first session, we decided to add two extra sessions on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. Novice runners of all abilities are welcome to join in.”

The weekly sessions are run by volunteers, with support from Burnley Leisure’s Get in2 team and Burnley Athletics Club and include a series of downloadable podcasts designed by NHS and Change 4 Life to structure each run with coaching to develop your fitness, speed and stamina progressively over time.

Graduates from Couch to 5k will then be able to join local running groups, including the weekly Burnley parkrun at Towneley Park, where they will be able to continue their new healthier lifestyle.
