Nordic Noir and Nyckelharpa at Burnley Mechanics

Internationally renowned folk musicians and storytellers, Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer come to the Burnley Mechanics on Thursday 29th September with a smorgasbord of dark Swedish tales and beautiful music. Tickets to the duo’s new show ‘Smörgåsballad’ are only £7 and are available online or by calling the box office now.

Nordic noir is all the rage at the moment with the likes of Stieg Larsson and Jo Nesbo books dominating the bestseller lists and the international success of Scandinavian crime drama’s The Killing and The Bridge.

But what happens when you combine dark Swedish tales, brooding folk music? Smörgåsballad is an evening of music and tales from Sweden. Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer take you on a journey where you find out about the tradition of the Easter Witches and what happens if you pick seven different wild flowers and put them under your pillow at Midsummer, the real meaning of the midsummer majstång.

Smörgåsballad is the first of an exciting line-up of acts to be programmed for The Front Room space at Burnley Mechanics Theatre as part of a new project which enables the local community to choose the shows they want to see happen in the venue.

A visual treat for the eyes and the ears, enjoy some “Nordic noir tales” and fall in love with the heroes and heroines of the land of ‘The Midnight Sun’. The Smörgåsballad is brought to life with accompaniment of traditional Scandinavian music on the Swedish nyckelharpa (keyed fiddle), Swedish säckpipa (bagpipes), willow flute kohorn (cow horn), accordion and guitar.

Smörgåsballad, Thursday 29th September, 7.30pm. Tickets £7.
