To build on the Burnley Leisure’s Get in2 rounders success and further develop the sport, a group of three Burnley Leisure staff members has completed Rounders England tutor course.
The gained qualification enables new tutors Janet Roundell, Devon Burnell and Nicola Hedge to deliver courses locally to further develop the rounders leagues in Burnley.
The courses will also help to increase the participation levels across the country.
The tutors will be running rounders young leaders course, activators training for 14+, and preliminary umpire courses.
Janet Roundell, sport and play development officer at Burnley Leisure, said: “Rounders in Burnley has been running for the past two years and has continued to grow from strength to strength.
“From having no opportunities for adults to play rounders, we have introduced new initiatives in the area and now we have more than 300 women playing the sport regularly.
“We’re always looking for new ways to build on our success and promote the sport to wider communities. The qualifications we got will enable us to train people up, who will then hopefully go on to set up their own teams and go on to umpire games in the Burnley rounders leagues.”
The one-day course was held at St Peter’s Leisure Centre and attracted people from as far as Devon.
The funding came from Sport England which was allocated to Burnley Rounders Club for training and development of rounders in Burnley.
Devon said: “It’s fantastic news that Sport England have invested in getting more people playing rounders in Burnley. There are some great rounders teams in Burnley and we plan to work with local communities to ignite the passion and get more people enjoying the sport of rounders.”
Summer rounders leagues are held on Monday and Wednesday evenings in Towneley Park and indoor winter leagues are held at St Peter’s Leisure Centre.
