When it comes to the gift or giving, ladies from the Rounders Club in Burnley are no strangers to raising money and supporting worthwhile causes.
This week they were delighted to present the Pendleside Hospice with a cheque for £500.
Janet Roundell, sport and play development officer at Burnley Leisure, who also runs the rounders leagues, said: “We are very proud with the amount of money we have managed to raise for such a valuable cause.
“We always choose charities close to our hearts and because a lot of the players knew people or had relatives, who have been cared by the hospice staff, we decided to give our full support to the Pendleside Hospice this summer.
“This one is especially close to our hearts as, unfortunately earlier this year, we lost a valued colleague Angela Catlow, who was looked after by the hospice staff before she passed away. Giving the donation to the Pendleside charity was giving something back in memory of Angela.”
Each year, the rounders teams choose two charities to focus on for the duration of the summer and winter leagues.
This year from mid-May until mid-August, 160 women from the summer Wednesday night league carried out fund-raising raffles each match night in aid of the Pendleside Hospice.
Vikki Bassek, from the Pendleside Hospice fund-raising team, said: “We’re extremely grateful to the rounders league for selecting the hospice to benefit from the raffle they held during their summer league.
“Pendleside’s annual running cost is now at £3.8 million and £2.8 million of that has to be raised locally. Without people in Burnley and Pendle fundraising for us, the hospice wouldn’t be able to continue to provide care for the people of Burnley and Pendle.”
In the past Rounders Club raised money for both local and national charities including Women’s Refugee, Serenity Room, Cancer Research UK and Pancreatic Cancer UK.
Just in two and a half years the project has been running, the rounders ladies have managed to raise more than £5k.
Winter league is currently raising money for Pendle Dogs In Need, a charity which secures loving homes for dogs.
Future fund-raising events and activities will be held to collect money for an automated external defibrillator.
The life-saving equipment will be used by Burnley Leisure’s Get in 2 team, which delivers a host of outdoor activities in the local parks as well as community venues, which don’t always have a defibrillator installed.
