Burnley Leisure & Culture partner with HFE to develop community-based physical activity sessions

Funded by Active Lancashire, EMD UK and Community Foundations for Lancashire and Merseyside through one of our Key Partners Girls up and Active CIC, we are providing a Level 2 Exercise to Music qualification to six members of our community, to grow community-based physical activity. This project has been designed to support women in the area with the opportunity to gain recognised and certified group exercise qualifications, promote active lifestyles and encourage the growth of fitness and community-based exercise. By building a foundation for sustainable group-based sessions within Burnley, we hope to promote social cohesion through shared fitness activity.

As part of our Cultural Reimagining of Burnley, we aim to upskill members of our community and address the many barriers to cultural development that limit ambition within the area. We will create a new narrative for Burnley by engaging diversity, raising aspirations and creating opportunities for learning. We understand and value the importance of equal representation and want to celebrate women of all cultures making their mark in the world of health and fitness.

This is an entry-level qualification for anyone wanting to teach freestyle or pre-choreographed exercise-to-music, giving students the necessary knowledge to plan and teach fun and safe classes with confidence and enthusiasm. On completion, students will be eligible to deliver freestyle group exercise classes in any suitable exercise environment, such as village halls, dance studios, or even outdoors. With this qualification and with our ongoing support, students will have the knowledge and ability to set up group exercise classes within their communities. By collaborating with renowned organisations like HFE, we aim to provide our community members with the highest quality training on offer to bring a passion for health and fitness back into our community.

Andrea Pollard Events and Partnership Manager at Burnley Leisure and Culture and Director at Girls Up and Active adds “we are so Grateful to EMDUK, Active Lancashire and Community Foundations for Lancashire and Merseyside for supporting us on this project. It’s a huge passion of mine to support and sustain accessible physical activity opportunities on people’s doorsteps. Its so exciting to see the dedication and commitment these ladies have shown already to increase physical activity opportunities in their local area.
