Everyone here at Burnley Leisure & Culture is delighted that our operational standards, and those relating to our safety and inclusiveness, have been recognised as among the best in our industry.
We have officially achieved The Active Standard – a quality mark for fitness and leisure operators, thus demonstrating our commitment to safety and the quality of our facilities. The Active Standard (TAS) was designed by ukactive, the UK’s trade body for the physical activity sector, with support from leading standards professionals and organisations across the UK and Europe. It aims to support all gyms, leisure centres, swimming pools and other sport and fitness facilities to raise standards that will, in turn, help to encourage more people to be more active.
It means BLC has been assessed on our health and safety practices, professional standards, safeguarding procedures, and data protection processes, helping to give our members and visitors the greatest confidence when using our facilities.
Scott Bryce, BLC’s Chief Operating Officer, Leisure Facilities, says: “We’re incredibly proud to achieve The Active Standard.
“It’s testimony to the commitment and professionalism of all our staff and the quality of services and facilities we provide – all of which combine to create a friendly, supportive community. While those are the outwardly tangible qualities that help us to attract and retain members, there are others such as our safeguarding and data protection standards that ensure BLC is a safe and inclusive place where every member can be themselves and enjoy their fitness and wellbeing journey.”
The assessment was conducted by Right Directions, an independent third-party assessment body, against strict criteria. If an operator is running multiple sites, as in our case, then a sample of these is assessed. TAS has been carefully aligned with our industry’s other major schemes, FITcert and Quest, to ensure the sector continues to improve and grow. The certification will last for three years before re-assessment is required.
Huw Edwards, CEO of ukactive, said: “Demand for our nation’s fitness and leisure facilities is growing rapidly as more and more people across the UK prioritise physical activity for their health and wellbeing. The Active Standard will help more people to feel confident that they can enjoy all the benefits of being active in a safe and inclusive environment.”
We are currently offering 50% off the first month and no joining fee for anyone signing up for a BLC membership in September or October.
As a not-for-profit organisation, all our surplus operating revenues are reinvested in our facilities and services, many of which play a major role in supporting the community.
