Big draw for budding artists in Burnley

A group of Burnley residents and visitors have teamed up with members of a Native American community in the US to draw an imaginative transatlantic art project.

One half of the canvas was decorated with traditional symbols by member of the Acoma tribe in New Arizona while the second half was completed in Burnley and features a range of the town’s famous landmarks and other attractions.

Burnley’s Mechanics At Home project linked with artist Ivan Liotchev, the founder of International Collaborative Drawing initiative, to give its budding artists an opportunity to participate in a creative cultural exchange.

Cath Ford, workshop leader for Mechanics At Home project, said: “We really enjoyed working on this exciting project with Ivan. Collaborating with a Native American community in Acoma on an art work is something we’ve never imaged and we’re proud to be part of it sharing our cultural, industrial and natural heritage with them.

“It has helped the group not only see the things that are important to the members of the Native American community, but also look back again at what Burnley has to offer from heritage properties to outdoor activities.”

The finished work will be on display at The Point in Doncaster together with other collaborative drawing pieces. The exhibition will run between 14th March and 7th May 2016.

The International Collaborative Drawing is an initiative aiming to unite diverse worldwide communities through cooperative creation.

Founded by in 2010, the project has engaged over 2000 participants across workshops, events and exhibition throughout the UK, Europe and the USA.
