Burnley Leisure join forces to support local youngsters

Burnley Leisure Active Streets project has teamed up with Lancashire County Council and other partner organisations to launch a new service supporting young people in Burnley.

Working with Prince’s Trust, county council, Jobcentre, DWP/JC and Calico, Burnley Leisure will be helping youngsters access volunteering opportunities as part of new Inbetweeners sessions at Burnley Youth Zone.

Andrea Pilling, project activator at Burnley Leisure, said: “We are delighted to be working with other organisations to support young people in Burnley and help them develop new skills via volunteering.”

Launching on Wednesday, 17th June, the sessions will be held at Burnley Youth Zone and will offer 16-19 year-olds a pool of resources honing their job hunting skills and boosting their future careers.

The weekly drop-in sessions running between 12.30pm and 4.30pm will provide young adults with advice and information about job opportunities and how to write successful CVs and job applications.

The service will also include a wide range of benefits including a free bus pass and free lunch, access to computers and games, and free Wi-Fi.

There will be opportunities to take part in different sport and fitness activities delivered by Burnley Leisure.

Nasreen Hassan, team leader Young People’s Service Burnley, said: “We have worked closely with our partners to get the initiative up and running. The aim is to provide a one-stop-shop for young adults where they can meet the partners face-to-face and chat about various opportunities available across the borough.”

Active Streets programme is a five-year scheme funded by the Big Lottery Fund aimed at using sport and volunteering to help young people develop new skills and divert them from less rewarding activities.
